From the legendary “Geographic, Physic, and Historical dictionary of Tuscany” a book by Emanuele Ripetti, year 1843: “San Casciano de’bagni, once Balnea Clusina, or Bagni di Chiusi. The castle, which now is just a small Land with a collegiate canonic church (S.Leonardo, already S.Cassiano ad Balnea), the administrative centre of the Community, royal vicariate of Radicofani, Chiusi diocese, Siena district. It’s placed around the high hillock’s crown, that overlooks the southern fork of Monte Cetone, around 1040 arms above sea level, where we find the Elvella stream, moved from the east sirocco wind” . From the time described, the landscape didn’t change much. We don’t really like to use the word “uncontaminated”, because it would underestimate the value of our magnificent panoramas, landscapes shaped by the hard-working men, landscapes that are for us real monuments kept alive from of the farming production. Citing again the legendary Ripetti, “About the farming productions, this Community territory, mainly shaped by mountains, is covered by acorn woods which breed many black animals, and in the clay hills and in the narrow valleys area,  is covered by cereal fields. Across the mountains raise spontaneously many aromatic plants, and they flourish with the Black Skin. The air is clear, but on the other hand the temperatures are rigid, and the County Seat, being in its high place is dominated by Sirocco and Mediterranean winds.
The “Scorza Nera” (“Black Skin”)is the name with which we call the truffle, that today is called scorzone. But in this area and in our community, you can easily find also the white one, since there are many “trifolari”. From Repetti’s times, workers, entrepreneurs, farmers, whoever worked the fields, but also dreamers and visionaries, significantly improved agriculture. We preserve the cereal, oily seeds and selected fodder production vocation from the past. In this way, the whole territory found the natural inclination for olive oil and wine (a portion of the land is fully submerged with the Chianti area).

The renowned thermal baths, were already praised by Oratio and well known during medieval times. We like to remember the anecdote where the abbot Clony was kidnapped from Ghino di Tacco, the Val d’Orcia hawk (as a Tuscany version of a Robin Hood), during his journey to San Casciano to “pass the waters” (as they usually said during that times), a story narrated by Boccaccio in the Decameron, specifically the second novel of the 10th day. San Casciano waters are rich in minerals, poor in sulphur, and delicate in taste, usually used for thermal purposes. They are 42 freshwater springs, with an average temperature of 40-Celsius degrees, a capacity of 5,5 millions of litres per day, a significant profusion that classifies San Casciano dei Bagni 3rd in Europe for the water capacity. Besides the resort and the Hotel Fonteverde, the thermal baths of San Casciano are famous for the “Baths”(old stone laundries built near the springs), which welcome for free thousands of visitors at the bottom of the town. Last but not least, the “human landscape”: we are few but good people, come and meet us.
